Your coworkers are judging your LinkedIn posts
If your boss is worried about your LinkedIn posts, read this.
When I first started posting on LinkedIn, I almost got fired over saying something slightly offensive.
Hitting “post” for the first time feels strange. You wonder what your coworkers will say. You seek your boss’s approval. You pray that no one judges it.
The company had mass-hired sales roles. And one of the new sales directors, who by the way was an obese hillbilly with a framed case of Hot Wheels in his office, ridiculed me over my content. “I see all them pictures you put on LinkedIn and it’s really cute, bud.”
His comments were shortly echoed by HR, concerned about preserving the company’s image. And the CEO thought some words could be changed, some hashtags added. Tons of feedback, all of which were unsolicited.
New social sellers often ask me, “How do I post without worrying my employer?”
Some advice: Corporate companies will always, always worry about these things. They’ll ask you to optimize your content for the company. But what happens when you get fired or quit? The content you’ve made for them was for nothing.
Post on LinkedIn for yourself; your brand matters much more than making your boss happy.
And in the case you get the boot, your brand will land you that next gig.
